Basic Things.

Will I need a car? Yes! There is plenty of parking, you can use the garage if you want, a local bus service is available but infrequent.

Fuel. Larger supermarkets sell fuel, the same as in England, they are cheaper than garages. Often you fill up and pay at a kiosk on leaving.

Driving. You need a UK sticker now we have left the EU, headlight converters are recommended, although on many newer cars you don't need them!

You should also carry a warning triangle and a hi-vis vest, stored within reach of the drivers seat.
If you are stopped, they will want to see your driving licence, insurance, MOT & registration document.
Watch out for ‘Priorite a droite’ give way to the right. Slowly being phased out.
Check the road markings for a Give Way or Stop line on side roads.

They do have roundabouts, however, the French don’t understand, so often it’s a free for all, particularly the centre of Vire.
The roads off the motorway are wonderfully quiet compared to England, so driving is a pleasure.
It is worth looking out for 'voitures sans permis' they are small, two-stroke cars with limited top speed.
If you lose your licence in France, you can still drive one of these. Due to this, they are often passed from one person to another
as licences are lost, yes, even for drink driving, so many are not insured!

Motorways. Some motorways charge a toll, so if you cross to Calais or Le Havre have some change to pay the fees.

Do I need to speak French? No, but a little helps! Shop keepers will always say “Bonjour” when you arrive, it is polite to respond. They appreciate it if you try!!

Can I use my debit card? Yes, most larger shops will accept cards and have the same system as the UK. Cash machines often have an English option.

Rubbish. Household waste is collected on Tuesdays. Leave your bags at the entrance to the courtyard or over the road.
Recycling, plastic bottles & cardboard are now left out with household waste, all re-cycling should be placed in yellow bags, provided by the Mairie.
Glass should be taken to the bottle bank on Rue de Sept Freres, or Boulevard du Nord.

Water. The house is on mains water, but it can taste a bit metallic. We always use bottled water bought cheaply from the supermarket, even in the kettle.

Electricity. All UK appliances, your phone charger etc. can run off French mains. Their plugs are different, but there are several adaptors at the house.
I haven’t got round to changing plugs on some things yet! Be careful unplugging things, their sockets are a bit flimsy compared to ours!

Paris. An often asked question, can I get to Paris? The best way is by train, it takes about 2 hours from Vire station.

Any other questions, please ask.
